Unable to obtain foreign aid, the Taliban may rely on huge drug revenue-Wall Street Journal

by admin

The Biden administration is preparing to cut off the Taliban’s access to billions of dollars in important overseas funding, but some officials have warned that the terrorist organization’s revenue from drug sales and other illegal activities may render Washington’s pressure as a last resort in vain.

According to people familiar with the matter, the United States has basically received the support needed to take action. The goal is to prevent the Taliban from using Afghanistan’s billion-dollar reserves in the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as through the World Bank and Aid promised by other donor agencies.

An IMF official told The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday that “Afghanistan has no access to” its reserves or other fund resources in the organization.

These people said that the US government’s diplomatic efforts to prevent the Taliban from using accounts established by the Afghan government focused on ensuring that foreign governments that control these accounts do not recognize the organization as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.
