United Arab Emirates, via the new civil code: now non-Muslims will be able to marry and divorce not based on sharia law

TEL AVIV – New reform of the civil code in United Arab Emirates (Eau): Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, president of the confederation of seven emirates and regent of Abu Dhabi, has issued a decree governing matters relating to personal status of non-Muslims in the emirate. The new legislation will allow non-Muslims to contract marriage, divorce and regulate matters relating to joint custody of children and inheritance according to civil law and not on the principles of sharia, Islamic law, the main source of law in the confederation.
