NEW YORK – The attacks against Asian American citizens do not stop, object, in recent months of repeated hate crimes, tragically increased since the beginning of the pandemic: also inflamed by the rhetoric of the former president Donald Trump who has repeatedly spoken of a “Chinese virus”. Yesterday morning on 42nd Street, in Midtown, a 65-year-old woman was savagely beaten: a stout African American first threw her to the ground, then punched her with racist slurs. Everything happened under the eyes of at least one person, perhaps the porter of the building in front of which the violence took place, stood by and then, when the man fled, leaving the poor woman on the ground, he withdrew and even closed the door. behind. The lady was hospitalized and has a fractured pelvis.

The second attack also took place yesterday on the “J line” of the subway, at the Kosciuszko station in Brooklyn. Here a man, also Asian, was hit several times by a hooded man and then almost suffocated by a strong grip in the throat, so much that he fainted.

Since the pandemic began, attacks on Asians are already nearly 4,000 across the country. The situation is so serious that even the prestigious magazine The New Yorker he decided to put in one of his famous covers, a mother and daughter, Asian in fact, worried while waiting for the train.

Meanwhile, in the neighborhoods the Chinatowns of large cities like New York and San Francisco are organizing themselves: with neighborhood patrols and even group evening walks, to allow everyone to leave the house without fear.

Now the White House has also decided to intervene: it will strengthen the Initiative for Asian Americans, increasing its effectiveness through coordination between federal agencies. Also appointing a permanent director of the Initiative, born at the time of the Clinton administration precisely to fight these specific hate crimes. In addition, it will allocate $ 49.5 million to programs for specific communities affected by racial violence.

“We cannot remain silent in the face of increasing violence against Asian Americans. These attacks are wrong, anti-American and must stop,” he tweeted. Joe Biden.

The episodes of racism denounced by American Asians

In 2020, at least 3,795 episodes were reported by American Asians: between physical assaults, insults and discriminatory acts. The data from Stop Aapi Hate (where the acronym stands for Asian American Pacific Islander) say so: a coalition born a year ago precisely to monitor the harassment suffered by the community in coincidence with the arrival of Covid in America.

In 2021 things seem to be getting worse. According to the latest report published by the association between 1 January and 28 February, the episodes of violence and discrimination reported are already 503. But Stop Aapi Hate points out that those that have emerged are only part of the attacks suffered almost daily. Sure, most incidents – around 68 percent – are “limited” to verbal harassment. But the number of physical assaults accounts for 11 percent of accidents.

One third of harassment (35.4) occurs in workplaces, 25.3 in the street and 9.8 in public parks. Another 11 percent of threats arrive, often anonymously, online. The Chinese are mainly targeted: 42.2 percent of the victims. Followed by 14.8 percent of people of Korean descent (such as at least four victims of the Atlanta massacre). But often the attackers look only at the cut of the eyes: Vietnamese and Filipinos represent respectively 8.5 and 7.9 per cent of the attacked.
