Almost like Pinocchio, almost like Giona. Michael Packard, an American lobster fisherman, had recently dived into the waters of Provincetown, Massachusetts, when he found himself in the mouth of a humpback whale. The whale, however, spit it out 30-40 seconds later, and Packard got away with just a dislocated knee.

“Here, I’m going to die”
The 56-year-old man said that on Friday morning, given the excellent weather, he took the boat with a companion. When he went into the sea with his diving equipment, he felt a shock and “everything became dark”, he told Wbz-Tv News. He believed he was attacked by a large white shark, but realized that the animal had no teeth. “Then I understood and I said to myself, ‘Oh my God, I’m in a whale’s mouth and it’s trying to swallow me. Here, I am going to die ‘”.

Thrown into the air
He thought of his wife and children, ages 12 and 15. He thought he was done for. Fortunately, shortly after the humpback whale – an animal that feeds by opening its mouth to swallow all the fish and krill it can intercept – rose to the surface, started shaking its head and threw it into the air: “I was free, I floated . I couldn’t believe it… and now I’m here and I can tell it ”.

Packard was brought back to the boat by his partner, then rescued on the beach by the Provincetown firefighters and taken to the Cape Cod hospital in Hyannis. In almost 40 years of honored career, nothing like this had ever happened to him. Despite his wife’s protests, he says he has no intention of changing jobs.
