UNRAE Negative January for the trailer and semi-trailer market: -8.1% and 1,210 units registered – Current affairs

The negative trend of the towed vehicle market will not change in 2024. According to MIT data, processed by UNRAE, trailers and semi-trailers with a total mass on the ground exceeding 3.5 t recorded a -8.1% in January (1,210 units registered compared to 1,316) compared to the same month last year.

Michele Mastagni, Coordinator of the Trailers, Semitrailers and Equipment Group of UNRAE, comments on the market results as follows: “Unfortunately, as highlighted several times over the past year, we must note that our sector is facing serious difficulties due to a lasting contraction in demand for new towed vehicles, a situation that is expected to continue for several months to come.”

“We welcome the timely publication of the implementing provisions for the new incentives intended for the renewal of the vehicle fleet of road haulage companies, hoping that these incentives can bring a tangible benefit and encourage a recovery in orders and registrations”, adds Mastagni.

“However, – continues the Coordinator of the Associative Group – we reiterate the insufficiency of the 7.5 million euro fund intended for the purchase of latest generation trailers and semi-trailers given the numerous requests for contributions expected. In fact, we expect a rapid exhaustion of the allocation upon the opening of the application period scheduled for March 4th.”

“For this reason, we now believe that the Government’s adoption of urgent support measures cannot be postponed, as well as the establishment of a multi-year fund dedicated to an extraordinary plan to modernize the entire Italian fleet. Only through clear and well-structured policies would certainty be finally guaranteed to operators in the sector, allowing a significant reduction in the average age of vehicles circulating on our roads”, concludes Mastagni.
