At the same time, as millions of manufacturing jobs have moved to a country that unabashedly employs slave labor, the quality of life of the American working class has declined significantly.
Although people are increasingly aware that the decision to allow China to join the WTO was a mistake, there is much less interest in reassessing the bipartisan economic consensus that led us to this decision.but
To restore the strength and status of the United States in the world, we must realize why both parties believe that China (the Communist Party) should be allowed to join the WTO, and its shortcomings.
First, it is based on the false assumption that the main identity of Americans is not a spouse, parent or worker, but a consumer. If you think that people are just consumers, then opening our economy to China is an unqualified commodity, because it means lower prices for daily necessities.
But American politicians ignore the reason why products are cheaper, because they are made by foreign workers with lower wages. In China, these workers may be enslaved Uyghurs who were kidnapped from their homes to work as laborers.
Politicians also ignore that the cost of temporarily lowering domestic prices is the collapse of American manufacturing.
We enjoy cheap goods, but at the cost of human rights violations and reduced industrial capacity.
It was in the decision to transfer production to China that we saw another failure of the neoliberal consensus. This failure stemmed from the false belief that the stock market and corporate profits are the same thing as actual economic growth and innovation.
Since 2001, the stock market has risen by 130%, but the income of the American middle class has only increased by 6%. Low-income Americans have not even grown at all. With the additional impact of inflation, the decline in the quality of life of the American people is shocking. After China joined the WTO, the profits of company shareholders have increased, but at the expense of the welfare of ordinary Americans and the economic flexibility of our country.
The 2008 financial crisis in the United States showed that an economy built on financial foundations is like a house built on sand, and 2020 (the outbreak of the epidemic) showed us that when an economy relies on foreign competitors to produce basic goods, it is How fragile.
Finally, American elites have always believed that the economic alliance with the CCP will enable the United States to have a greater influence on China and the rest of the world, but the situation is just the opposite. By sending our jobs and factories to China and allowing the CCP to steal our technology and research, Beijing has turned our company into its propaganda, and our athletes and celebrities have become CCP ambassadors.
We saw this when the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable asked the Biden administration to cancel Trump’s tariffs on China. We saw this when major American companies and a faction committed to reaching a “climate agreement” with Beijing persuaded the Democratic Party to prevent my Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act from becoming law, because they have been doing this for months. We will see this when investors like Ray Dalio say that the CCP is just a “strict parent” and Americans have “its own human rights issues.”
When the economic theories that govern our country lead people to seek benefits for foreign powers and cover up their crimes, they are very detailed, and these theories have rotted. Now is the time to boldly and directly advance American interests and values in our public policies.
It is not easy to open a path to pro-American capitalism that protects our national interests and serves the common interests. Some of the most powerful companies in our economy have made deep investments in the status quo, and many of the most powerful people in the US government are firmly committed to the path we are taking.
But formulating a new way forward is the only way forward. It will not be the work of one person or one party. It must be the work of an entire generation and span the entire political realm. It must become our new consensus.
