Deb Haaland is the first Native American minister in a US government. Elected in 2018 as one of the top two Native American women in Congress, Haaland was today confirmed home secretary to President Joe Biden with 51 to 40 votes.
Supporting Haaland was an alliance of progressive and indigenous leaders, aiming to place one of their own in a key position in natural resources, public lands and Indian business.
“I hope this appointment can be an inspiration for Americans to move forward together as a nation and create opportunities for all of us,” he said, adding, “It’s hard not to feel obligated to protect this land, and I feel that every indigenous person in this country he understands it. “
