by admin

American wreestel star and actor John Cena apologizes to his Chinese fans for calling Taiwan “a country” during an interview in early May to promote his latest film “Fast & Furious 9”. Speaking to Taipei TVBS, 44-year-old Cena said Taiwan would be “the first country” to see this latest “Fast and Furious”. For China, Taiwan is only a province of the People’s Republic, a position that the island strongly rejects.

“I made a mistake, I’m really sorry for that mistake,” Cena said in Mandarin in a video posted to his Weibo account, a very popular Twitter-like microblogging app in China. “I love and respect China and the Chinese people”. Cena is just the latest star to come under fire from the nationalistic anger of Chinese viewers over comments on Taiwan, Hong Kong or Xinjiang. For many Chinese, Cena’s apology was not enough: “Use Mandarin to say that Taiwan is part of China, otherwise we won’t accept your apology.”

The wrestler’s message made the United States turn up their noses for opposite reasons. Even former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo intervened by censoring Cena’s bow to Beijing. The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry did not comment.

The public in China – underlines Variety – has brought 135 million dollars of proceeds on the 162 million of global revenues for this latest “Fast and Furious”.
