Robert Kennedy’s killer will not be released from prison. California Governor Gavin Newsom announced in a piece published by the Los Angeles Times, of opposing the granting of probation to Shiran Shiran, the 77-year-old convicted of the murder of Robert Kennedy in 1968.
According to Newsom, Shiran “lacks the responsibility and conscience required to approve his safe release into the community.”
The governor’s decision comes five months after the commission of the Earl of Los Angeles decided to give the inmate parole.
Newsom has a strong devotion to the figure of the former Democratic presidential candidate and keeps a photo of him on his desk with his father, Judge William Newsom. Six of Kennedy’s nine children still alive had asked the governor to overturn the California Board of Parole Hearings’ decision, stating in a joint note that the verdict had “inflicted” on them “enormous additional pain.”
