A group of Senators from the Democratic Party announced in a statement the introduction of a bill aimed at ending the federal ban on the use of marijuana in the United States.

As with numerous other issues at the center of the political debate in the United States, the promoters of legislative intervention have characterized the issue as a racial justice intervention against the African American community, which is disproportionately represented among drug offenders. The proposal also acknowledges the fact that a growing number of US states have already legalized the use of marijuana for medical and, in some cases, even recreational purposes. The bill under consideration by the Democrats would remove federal nonviolent offenses related to the sale and use of marijuana, and would allow those responsible for this category of offenses currently in federal prisons to request a review of their trial.
