Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would have funded President Joe Biden’s government, provided billions of dollars in hurricane relief, and averted a US debt default. As the Washington Post writes, Republican opposition has dealt a “death blow” to the measure that was passed in the House last week, and which now increases pressure on Democrats to devise an alternative route before pressing tax deadlines.
Failure to resolve issues could cause major financial calamities, the White House warned, plunging the United States into another recession. The debt ceiling must be raised by mid-October or there is a risk of an absolute first default, which could destabilize global markets.
