Vaccines: drones are coming to the US to deliver doses to remote areas

by admin

The first deliveries of anti-covid vaccines aboard drones in the United States will start in June: they will be experimental ‘flights’ with the aim of reaching the most remote corners of the country where citizens have difficulty in going to doctors or hospitals . These include, for example, workers on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. The first ‘top-down’ deliveries of vaccines will be implemented by drone company Dragonfly, in collaboration with Coldchain Technology Services: its drones will take the immunization vials to Texas.

Coldchain has already developed thermal containers in the shape of cubes of about 30 cm, the temperature-controlled boxes can contain between 600-1,500 vials depending on how they are stored by the manufacturers. The cubes were built to maintain very low temperatures sufficient to safely store Pfizer vaccines for 48 hours and Moderna’s for 72 hours. The second company authorized to use drones for the transport of medical materials is Volansi of San Francisco which has already transported Merck medicines to North Carolina since last October, but has not yet experimented with the transport of vaccines. “Our containers – said the administrator, Hannan Parvizian recently – are also designed to carry anti-covid vaccines“.
