ISTANBUL. Turkey will be officially out of the Istanbul Convention on violence against women and gender-based violence from tomorrow. The final act of the abandonment of the treaty by the country that hosted its drafting arrived yesterday evening, with the decision of the Council of State which rejected the appeal with which the opposition asked that the decision of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan be canceled. The Council of State rejected the appeal with 3 votes in favor and two against, establishing that it is not necessary to notify the decision to the Council of Europe, although the Istanbul Convention provides for this circumstance in Article 80. Erdogan signed the decree that sanctioned the abandonment of the Convention in the early hours of the morning of March 20, sparking a wave of protests involving women’s rights associations, LGBT platforms, numerous NGOs and opposition parties, which then appealed to the Council of State.
