International Kissing Day: The History Behind the Celebration

A kiss can mean so many things: love, passion, affection, friendship, greeting, farewell, consolation, celebration, and more. It is a universal form of communication that is practiced in all cultures and at all ages. That is why it has its own dedicated day to honor it. But do you know the origin of International Kissing Day?

According to the Royal Spanish Academy, a kiss is “to touch or press someone or something with a movement of the lips as an expression of love, desire, or reverence, or as a greeting.” This carnal meaning inspired a Thai couple to set a world record for the longest kiss, which led to the creation of International Kissing Day less than a decade ago.

International Kissing Day is celebrated on April 13 in honor of the longest kiss in recorded history. In 2013, Ekkachai Tiranarat and Laksana Tiranarat from Thailand won the world record for the longest kiss, lasting 58 hours, 35 minutes, and 58 seconds. They received recognition from Guinness World Records and various prizes.

The history of kissing dates back to 2500 BC in India, with references in the Kamasutra as a sacred sexual practice. The culture of kissing spread to Europe during the invasions of Alexander the Great and is present in various mythological and literary texts. Even the Bible records the kiss as a symbol of betrayal.

International Kissing Day celebrates the art of kissing as a form of communication, expression of love, and connection between individuals. It is a day to remember the power and significance of a simple gesture that can convey so much.
