Whether Ecuador cancels Assange’s citizenship is extradited to the U.S. is still inconclusive

Original title: Ecuador cancels Assange’s citizenship

The lawyer for Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, said that an Ecuadorian court cancelled Assange’s citizenship earlier this week, and the latter will appeal.

The British “Guardian” reported on the 28th that the Administrative Dispute Court of Pichincha Province, Ecuador, ruled on the 26th that Assange’s application for naturalization had multiple inconsistencies, signature discrepancies, suspected tampering of documents, and unpaid fees. Therefore, naturalization was invalid.

Assange’s lawyer Carlos Poveda said that the ruling did not follow the legal procedures required for the abolition of nationality, and that Assange is currently behind bars in the UK, unable to appear in court, and his personal rights have not been respected.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador, the Pichincha Provincial Administrative Dispute Court “rules independently and follows legal procedures”, and the lawsuit surrounding the validity of Assange’s naturalization was initiated by the previous government.

Assange was born in Australia and is 50 years old. In 2006, he founded Wiki Jie Mi. In 2010, this website exposed a large number of secret documents about the Afghan War and the Iraq War, and the US government lost its face. Assange was subsequently investigated by Sweden for suspected rape, denied all charges after being arrested in the UK, and hid in the Ecuadorian Embassy in the UK during bail in 2012. In December 2017, the then President of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, granted Assange Ecuadorian citizenship.

However, Assange was not “secure” during his asylum in the embassy, and his remarks on international current affairs have repeatedly caused headaches for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador. In April 2019, the Ecuadorian side stopped offering Assange asylum and “asked him out” of the embassy. The British police immediately arrested Assange for violating the bail regulations. US prosecutors charged Assange with 17 counts of espionage and one count of computer abuse the following month. In November of the same year, the Swedish side abandoned the investigation of the rape allegations against Assange.

Assange is currently being held in a high-security prison in London. Whether he will be extradited to the United States is still uncertain.
