Original title: WHO: 12 countries reported 169 cases of acute hepatitis of unknown children, 1 death

The World Health Organization announced on April 23 that 169 cases of childhood hepatitis of unknown etiology have been reported in 12 countries around the world, and at least one person has died. The exact cause is still under investigation.

According to the WHO notification, as of April 21, the United Kingdom, the United States, Spain, Israel, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Norway, France, Romania and Belgium had reported cases of childhood hepatitis of unknown etiology, with a total of 169 cases, of which 114 were from England. The patients ranged in age from 1 to 16 years old, and 17 required liver transplants.

Among them, adenovirus was detected in at least 74 cases, new coronavirus was detected in 20 cases, and both new coronavirus and adenovirus were detected in 19 cases.

Adenovirus infection is a possible hypothesis for childhood hepatitis of unknown etiology, but it cannot fully explain the severity of the clinical situation of this type of hepatitis, and its exact etiology is still under investigation.

The WHO said that since April 15, when the WHO published news that the UK had reported cases of hepatitis in children of unknown etiology, more related cases have continued to emerge. Most cases are asymptomatic. WHO is closely monitoring the situation and is working with the UK health department and other member states.
