WHO: Omicron is expected to spread worldwide, Portugal and Scotland suspected of community spread

(Geneva 30th comprehensive report) The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that the Omicron variant crown disease strain has a high chance of further spreading around the world, which may cause serious consequences. It calls on all countries to increase the vaccination rate of high-risk individuals as soon as possible. .

At present, more and more European countries have declared a fall. The latest reported cases of Omicron infection are Sweden and Spain, while Portugal and Scotland are suspected of community transmission.

The Swedish health department announced on Monday that a person returning from South Africa was infected with Omicron and was the first person in the country to be diagnosed with the above-mentioned variant strain. Sweden has tightened entry measures for southern African countries since last Friday, and is closely following the recommendations issued by the World Health Organization and the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC).

More and more countries fall

In Spain, the Madrid health department also confirmed on Monday that a 51-year-old man who had previously travelled to South Africa and stopped in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, was found to be infected with Omicron on Sunday, the country’s first case. In addition to Sweden and Spain, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal have also reported cases of Omicron infection earlier. In Portugal, 13 professional players will be recruited in a soccer ball, and last weekend there was a situation where a match had to be suspended after halftime due to lack of players.

Scotland confirmed the first 6 cases, which led to the UK recording 8 related cases on Monday. Some cases were recruited in the community without a travel history. The number of patients infected with the new variant strain has increased to 11 in the UK.

Of the new cases of Omicron infection, two occurred in London. The Joint Committee on Immunization in the United Kingdom (JCVI) recommended on the same day that all adults over 18 years of age should be opened to provide booster doses of coronavirus vaccine, and the time between the second dose of vaccine and booster dose should be reduced from the current 6 months to a minimum 3 months, and 12 to 15-year-old teenagers can be given a second dose of vaccine. British Health Minister Javid then said that he would follow the above recommendations and announce the details in the next few days.

Scottish Chief Minister Sturgeon said that among the cases of Omicron infection in Scotland, some people have no recent travel history or contact with other people who have returned from countries in southern Africa.

She warned that Omicron may have spread in the community, but there is no evidence that the situation is continuing, nor can it be seen spreading at this stage.

Omicron was first discovered in Botswana, Africa, and then spread in South Africa. It is currently found in Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania.

Despite global concerns, scientists warn that it is unclear whether Omicron is more worrying than other variant strains.

Vaccine access restricted areas spread rapidly

Omicron further proves the expert’s long-standing view: No place is safe until enough vaccines are vaccinated on a global scale. The more the virus spreads, the greater the chance of it mutating.

Hatchett, one of the founders of the United Nations-supported global vaccine sharing program COVAX and the CEO of the Epidemic Prevention Innovation Alliance (CEPI), said that the emergence of Omicron accurately realized the prediction of scientists.

They warned that the virus has increased its spread in areas where access to vaccines is limited, and that the virus has accelerated its evolution.
