WHO Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus pointed out at a press conference: “Compared to the Delta variant, the Omicron variant is less likely to cause severe illness, but the Omicron variant is still a dangerous virus, especially for for the unvaccinated.”
“More than 85% of Africa’s population has yet to receive a single dose of the vaccine,” Tedros said. “Unless we close this (vaccination) gap, we will not be able to end the intense period of this pandemic.”
He also noted that the “vast majority” of people hospitalized with the virus around the world are unvaccinated.
