Borneo FC won dramatically 2-1 over Persebaya Surabaya in Week 28 of Liga 1 this season. These results brought Pieter Huistra’s team to seal a place in the championship series.

Playing at Batakan Stadium, Balikpapan, Thursday (7/3/2024), Borneo FC got a golden opportunity in the 25th minute. Felipe Cadenazzi fired a shot after receiving Wiljan Pluim’s breakthrough pass, but it was blocked by Persebaya goalkeeper, Andhika Ramadhani.

The hosts threatened again in the 29th minute. Adam Alis continued Fajar Fathur Rahman’s long pass, but his shot was also blocked by Andhika.

Persebaya is not silent. Through a counter-attack, Bruno Moreira escaped the offside trap and then outwitted Fajar, but the final shot was easily saved by Borneo FC goalkeeper Nadeo Arga Winata. Score 0-0 closed the first half.

In the second half, Borneo FC did not relax their attacks. Terens Puhiri had a chance in the 50th minute, but Andhika blocked it again. The 25 year old goalkeeper also thwarted Stefano Lilipaly’s chance in the 61st minute.

Persebaya actually managed to take the lead in the 85th minute. Substitute Toni Firmansyah successfully picked up a loose ball, controlled it briefly, then fired a volley which landed squarely in the right corner of the Borneo FC goal.

However, Bajul Ijo’s victory which was in sight was shattered after Kasim Botan scored an own goal in the 90+2 minute. He intended to clear a cross that went into the penalty box, but his header ended up going into his own goal.

This goal then sparked friction in the middle of the field, forcing Persebaya to have to play with 10 people after Paulo Henrique was given a red card for unsportsmanlike action. Borneo FC took advantage of this advantage in the number of players.
