VfL Wolfsburg achieved an important victory in a duel against a direct competitor in the Bundesliga relegation battle: Lower Saxony defeated VfL Bochum 1-0 (1-0) on Saturday. Thanks to the success, coach Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team gained a little breathing room in the bottom of the table.

The celebrated hero on the “Wolves” side was Jonas Wind, who scored the goal of the day with his tenth goal of the season (43rd). It was the Dane’s first after 1,335 goalless minutes. He last scored on matchday 12 in a 2-1 home win over Leipzig at the end of November.

Hasenhüttl: “Three points worked hard”

The Wolfsburg team earned their success – their first at home since that victory over RB – in the duel between the two physical training clubs (VfL) in a tense, duel-focused and weak game with an overall solid defensive performance. “It was about different virtues today,” explained Wolfsburg coach Hasenhüttl. Before the game the question was whether his team could do that – the answer was very clear: “The team proved that and worked hard for these three points. Everything else can be left out of the discussion.”

For the new coach Hasenhüttl and his team, the second win in the fourth game under his direction was an extremely important one. In the tight relegation race, the Lower Saxony team was able to distance themselves by four points from interim coach Heiko Butscher’s team.

Bochum loses the lead…

In an initial phase that was led very cautiously by both teams, Wolfsburg were initially the somewhat braver team. The Hasenhüttl protégés approached the Bochum goal, but lacked the final determination. After a corner from Ridle Baku, Sebastiaan Bornauw sailed just past the ball (10th), a little later Baku could not control a cross from Yannick Gerhardt (11th). In both situations there was more in it for Lower Saxony, who otherwise had difficulty breaking down Bochum’s massive defense.

And the guests? After just under half an hour, Patrick Osterhage had the best half-chance of the game to date: via Philipp Hofmann and Felix Passlack, the ball landed at the midfield clearer, who missed his shot from 13 meters (28th).

…and wind hits just before the break

The Bochum team were now clearly the better VfL – and came very close to the lead twice: But first Takuma Asano failed with a lob to Wolfsburg’s keeper Pavao Pervan (32nd), then referee Tobias Reichel ruled out the guests’ supposed 1-0 because of an offside position Osterhage came back from a corner (39′).

When the Lower Saxony team appeared again near the guests’ penalty area after around 30 minutes of offensive absence, the lead, which was both surprising and undeserved at the time, fell. And the goal was a symbol of the poor first half: the Bochum team initially failed to clear the ball several times. The play equipment jumped back and forth between the players like a pinball ball before Wind had insight, took the ball with him on his chest and hit it dry with a low shot (43′).

Tiago Tomas missed the 2-0

Wolfsburg came out of the break well and immediately had the chance to increase. But Tiago Tomas didn’t hit the ball correctly, so his shot wasn’t a problem for Bochum goalkeeper Manuel Riemann (46th).

As a result, however, they lost this momentum again and were increasingly pushed into their own half by the guests – a game with fire given their narrow lead. Hofmann’s header from a cross from Kevin Stöger flew just past the right corner of the Wolfsburg goal (71′).

Wolfsburg defends solidly

Otherwise, the “Wolves” defended Bochum’s attacking efforts solidly, but on the other hand they also failed to play for the decision: the passes were too imprecise, the build-up game was too insecure, restless and uninspired.

In the final phase, the guests opened up more and more and the Hasenhüttl team had good chances to make it 2-0 through substitutes Jakub Kaminski (86th) and Kevin Paredes (88th), but missed them while standing alone. It no longer mattered and Lower Saxony was able to celebrate the extremely important eighth win of the season.
