With the weapons delivered to Kiev we are already at war with Moscow

With the weapons delivered to Kiev we are already at war with Moscow

We sometimes pronounce the words reluctantly. We use them to separate us from ourselves, from the consequences of our actions. They mean prudence. And lack. But in the face of what is happening in these days in the plains of Ukraine, they must be pronounced because it cannot be done otherwise. Here they are: the West, NATO, Europe and Italy are already at war with Russia which has invaded Ukraine and set a hand to its destruction. Because sending weapons to those who fight is, in every possible meaning, war, juridical, moral, to enter combat, that is, to participate and to kill.

The weapons we have supplied and now in greater quantity and effectiveness will supply to the army of Kiev will not serve as a simple tool of deterrence, to convince an enemy, still uncertain, that it will pay a heavy price if it attacks. This is the story of yesterday, buried under the bombs of the inveterate Moscow plunderer. We have now freed the terrible genie from the lamp.

They will not parade them in Independence Day parades to display them as a reserve, a guarantee. Since Putin has already attacked with a brutal and guilty choice, they are used to kill the Russians. Those weapons of ours, which have come out of our arsenals, are used, gut, annihilate, shoot down, eliminate as many enemy fighters as possible in a more modern technological, effective way.

The men who handle those sophisticated weapons, very lethal as it is scrupulously specified, would not be able to do it if they had not been trained in recent months and years by instructors of the Atlantic Alliance. We therefore do not threaten, deprecate, confiscate bank accounts or luxury villas. We contribute to the death accounts, so we are in the war. Moscow has understood this very well, raising the tone of its threat of retaliation against what he calls “external actors”, that is, the allies now on the Kiev field.

In the statements of Western leaders, the word war with hypocrisy has deserted the meaning it covers. Providing guns and anti-tank is presented as a slightly stronger appendage of economic sanctions, as if it were a necessary and harmless gesture, aseptic for those who do it when someone is attacked and the persecuted do not have the sufficient means to defend themselves. This is true of penalties. But not for the supply of armaments when we are already fighting.

Westerners know the difference very well: in 2011 the persecuted were the Syrians massacred by Bashar Assad, even the gas he used to annihilate them. They asked for weapons: to defend themselves better. Didn’t they look like the Ukrainians? Obama and the West did not want to make war for them, the Syrians were not important, they were far away. And in fact we gave them smiles, encouragement, a little pity, without getting too anxious. But not even a rifle. Because it meant going to war with Bashar and his allies. Precisely.

Words must be respected especially when the words are war, invasion, enemy, destruction. They are not shadows to be summoned and which can be made to disappear on command. Each has its terrible raison d’etre, each contains a terrible secret of consequences. We must free them to understand what is happening and then hold them firm if we are on the side of justice, if they serve to defend victims and punish the guilty. Behind each word there are other words, all intangible and still invisible but full of expectation, fear and hope for others as well. The word war is awe and horror. Sometimes it is a necessity. But it must be said.

We shyly take refuge behind the sentence: but we do not send fighters to the ground, there will be no American or German or Italian soldiers in the trenches of Kiev or Karchov. And with this we conclude a cheerful armistice with all sorts of questions. Biden announced, as if it were a generous concession, that he will not order and will try to implement the ban on flying over Ukrainian territory to stop Russian bombing. As the Americans have punctually applied in all places where they have engaged on the terrain of conflicts from Iraq to Libya. But not because he wants to keep himself out of the war: this time there is no enemy in front of him who at most can deploy old and harmless bolts. The “no fly zone” would be equivalent to facing uncertain duels with the Russian air force, certainly not easy to keep on the ground without suffering losses. A choice of military prudence. Better keep the Ukrainians in the forefront.

The trouble is that the war fought without saying it, like all cunning, holds up for a limited time. It will be the Ukrainians themselves who will bring it down. When the Russian power strikes them with all possible violence, so far they have only tried bloody premises, the “leased” weapons will no longer be enough and they will ask us to fulfill the commitment we have signed by sending them: they will ask us to intervene , to take us by the collar directly with men in flesh and blood and not with pure ideas.

It always happens like this: first you send weapons and “instructors”, then it turns out that it is not enough and you are already wrapped up in that war, you are a part of it and the only way to try to untie yourself is to wrap yourself up more and more hoping to find your boss of the rope. As on the table, first the jacks are thrown, then we move on to the queens, the kings, the aces.
