Woman who joined ISIS as a teenager loses appeal to prevent British citizenship being taken away

(CNN) — Shamima Begum, the British woman who left the UK to join ISIS at the age of 15, has lost an appeal to the Court of Appeal over the decision to revoke her British citizenship.

Begum, along with two school friends, flew to Syria in 2015 to join the terrorist group ISIS. She later married an ISIS fighter and lived in Raqqa for several years.

In 2019, Begum appeared in al-Hawl, a Syrian refugee camp, where she pleaded with the UK Government to allow her to return to the UK for the birth of her son. However, then Home Secretary Sajid Javid stripped her of her British nationality in February of that year. Tragically, Begum’s newborn son died in a Syrian refugee camp the following month.

Begum revealed to British media that she had lost two other children before her newborn son, both of whom also died in Syria during their childhood.

This story is still developing.
