YB beaten 3-1 at Wankdorf by Sporting

Barring a miracle, Young Boys will not see the round of 16 of the Europa League. The Swiss champion lost 3-1 to Sporting de Portugal on Thursday at Wankdorf in the first leg of the round of 16.

Leader of a Portuguese championship in which it remains on seven victories in a row, Sporting forced the decision in 20 minutes of play, straddling the first and second half. The 3-1 headed goal by Gonçalo Inacio just after returning from the locker room (48th) stunned the Young Boys.

Led 2-0 after an autogoal from Aurèle Amenda (31st), which clumsily deflected a cross from Marcus Edwards, and a penalty caused by an uninspired David von Ballmoos in the circumstances and transformed by Sporting star Viktor Gyökeres (41st ), YB was able to get back on track after this first half.

Filip Ugrinic thus scored the goal of hope in the 42nd by catapulting into the back of the net a ball poorly repelled by Lisbon goalkeeper Antonio Adan, also injuring himself in this angry action. Cédric Itten even scored a sumptuous goal in stoppage time, but this success was canceled for offside.

YB finishes at 10

YB never closed the game, but could not ignite this meeting after the 3-1 despite the entry into play of the restless Meschack Elia against a Sporting in management mode. Raphaël Wicky’s squad, however, went through all the moods in the final minutes, the expulsion of Ali Camara (89th) occurring just after another goal canceled for an offside by Darian Males.
