At least 22 young people between the ages of 18 and 20 have died in a nightclub located in a slum in the coastal city of East London, South Africa. As reported by the provincial police chief, General Thembinkosi Kinana, explained to a local television channel that “the circumstances of the death are not known at this time”. It is assumed that a stampede from the room due to an accident or some toxic substance in the air.

The discovery took place in the local Enyobeni Tavern this morning, there are also people injured. “The circumstances of the find are under investigation,” a police spokesperson told the local channel Newsroom Africa“We don’t want to speculate at this stage,” added Tembinkosi Kinana.
The relatives of the victims have not yet had access to recognize the bodies and according to local media the area has been isolated. A massive number of law enforcement officers would be present on the site. Nomthetheleli Lilian Mene, local police commissioner, told a SABC news that “there may have been a crowd inside the place.”
Kinana also added to local media that most of the victims would be young people between 18 and 20 years old. While eyewitnesses collected by the Daily Dispatch said the bodies lay on the ground as if suddenly passed out.
