FDA approves Comirnaty to be related to Pfizer?
Talk about vaccines. The FDA approved the Pfizer vaccine, noting that the FDA approved a vaccine used under the trade name “Comirnaty”. On the surface, people would think that it was the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine approved for emergency use, but there are some subtle points in the wording. The emergency authorization continues to be effective for 12-15 years old, and for certain immune deficiencies over 12 years old plus a third dose. In addition, due to supply reasons, emergency authorization continues to be effective for the use of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine over 16 years of age, and this use has also been approved.
The problem is here. If the FDA approves it, the emergency authorization will automatically become invalid. Why is it still valid?
Perhaps the next question is to answer this: What is the relationship between “Comirnaty” and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine?
The FDA-approved Pfizer product Comirnaty and the FDA-authorized Pfizer vaccine are of the same formula and can be used interchangeably without causing any safety and effectiveness concerns. As a result, providers can continue to distribute emergency-authorized injections, just like vaccines for approval. For administrative purposes, injections distributed under emergency authorization and approved injections can be interchanged.
Does this mean that the products produced after approval will use the trade name “Comirnaty” and have the FDA-approved mark, while those produced before the approval will continue to be treated as emergency authorization? But because they are the same product, they can be used interchangeably?
There is a subtle difference between the two
The FDA seems to acknowledge here that the approved product Comirnaty is slightly different from the emergency authorized product, but they are used the same. There is no problem in medicine, but there is a difference in law.
In medicine, this is the same thing, with exactly the same formula, production, use, effects, and side effects.
However, the problem is that if the use is urgently authorized, it is an experimental drug, which is protected by the government and the law, and the public has the right to refuse to use it, because the experiment must be voluntary, but problems after use are their own responsibility. The producer is not legally liable.
The FDA-approved drugs are not experimental drugs and can be used compulsorily. They are the same as other approved vaccines.
