Youtube closes Russian TV channels in German for disinformation on Covid. Moscow: “It’s a media war”

by admin

Youtube becomes an international battleground. Yesterday the video streaming site headed by Google decided to block the German-language channels of Rt, the Russian state TV. The cause of the blockade is the violation of the “coronavirus disinformation policy”.

In Moscow the blockade did not go down and through Maria Zakharova, spokesman for the foreign ministry, defined the fact as an “information war” and threatened to block the German media operating in the country in retaliation. Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Vladimir Putin, added pore the dose: “There are clear signs that the laws of the Russian Federation have been violated in a very rude way, because, of course, this is linked to censorship”. Harsh tones, therefore, also shared by the director of RT who in a tweet spoke of “a real media war declared by Germany against Russia”.

Berlin denies the allegations to the sender, and denies any kind of interference by the German government in the platform’s decision. “The idea that the Youtube initiative against RT has to do with the German executive is the result of a conspiracy theory, – replied Steffen Seibert, spokesman for the government – there has been no federal attack on the Russian press” . Seibert then made a preventive criticism of the retaliation promised by the Kremlin, underlining that any action in this sense “would show little respect for press freedom”.
