As per tradition, the annual Viking festival (Up Helly Aa) took place in Lerwick, the capital of the Shetland Islands, in Scotland. He lit more than a thousand torches during the two processions, one in the morning and the other in the evening, to celebrate the Norse heritage of these places. The burning of a reproduction of a Viking ship lights up the night. For the first time in its 143-year history, women and girls joined the Jarl squad and led the procession through the city. The festival is held on the last Tuesday of every January. (LaPresse)
