The 1914 painting hangs on a wall in Trinity College, University of Cambridge
An activist from the Palestine Action group tore a portrait of Lord Arthur Balfour, former British minister, author of a statement in 1917 in which he expressed the United Kingdom’s support for the creation of a “national home for the Jewish people” at Cambridge University. in Palestine.
In a video published on X by his group, the activist is seen spraying red paint on the canvas and then damaging it by cutting it with what appears to be a box cutter. The 1914 painting is by Philip Alexius Laszlo and hangs on a wall in Trinity College.
Police confirmed the incident and announced that an investigation has been launched. “No arrests have been made at this stage,” he said in a statement. In a statement, Trinity College “regretted the damage caused to the portrait during public hours” of the institution.
