To practice the profession of General Practitioner (GP), a central figure for the social health system, it is necessary to complete – by obtaining the relative Diploma – a three-year course for specific training in General Medicine; in 2019, one of the eight Educational Centers of the Lombardy Region authorized to organize the course was activated also in the ATS of the Po Valley.
On 1 April 2019, the three-year course was launched at the ATS Educational Center in the Po Valley (directed by the General Manager, Dr. Salvatore Mannino), in collaboration with ASST of Mantua; the training hours were divided between internships and theoretical activities, seminars, comparison and research sessions, guided study and, above all, many hours were planned as a practical activity in the hospital and in the offices of general practitioners.
With the three-year course 2020/2023, which began at the end of July, the collaboration between the ATS of the Val Padana and the ASST of Cremona for the hospital internship and specialist seminar activity was also initiated. A cooperation strongly desired by the General Managers of ATS Val Padana, Salvatore Mannino and ASST of Cremona, Giuseppe Rossi.
From October 2021, therefore, the doctors in training have the opportunity to carry out the practical activity – as well as at the ASST of Mantua – also at the hospitals and territorial units of the ASST of Cremona; with this opportunity, the ATS of the Po Valley is able to propose 2 delivery points for the course, which in fact allow to expand the training offer on the territory.
The hours of hospital training that the students will have to carry out are over 1400 divided into the areas of Clinical Medicine, General Surgery, Emergency Department, Maternal and Child Department, Obstetrics and Gynecology, to which are added the hours provided in the “basic structures ”, Such as the Addiction Service, the Psycho-Social Center, the Counseling Center, the Hospice, the RICCA Network (Integrated Clinical Assistance Continuity Network) and specialist outpatient clinics supported by clinical tutors. Important is the task required of the 102 Tutors identified in the ASST of Cremona, who will have to guide the trainee during the period of practical activity at the specialized and territorial Operational Units and express the evaluation of the knowledge and skills acquired in relation to the didactic-training objectives.
Therefore, to date, three-year courses have been activated at the ATS Educational Center in the Po Valley, the management of which is entrusted to Dr. Annalisa Longari, Head of the Training Office and company contact for the course; the organizational and didactic aspects are defined and managed in collaboration with the Didactic Coordinator dr. Angelo Rossi, the hospital representatives dr.ssa Federica Pezzetti of the ASST of Cremona and dr. Piero Superbi of the ASST of Mantua, in addition to the GPs referents dr. Marco Davide Bussini and Dr. Doriana Bertazzo and the contact person for primary care activities, Dr. Cecilia Donzelli of the Department of Primary Care of ATS.
In these first three years of experience, an important collaboration network has been created, also through constant dialogue between the Training Offices of the companies involved; thanks to this new cooperation, attention to the territory is consolidated, which needs new doctors duly trained.
