That of “Surgery” or “Constituency Surgery” is an all-British tradition, a natural consequence of the United Kingdom’s majority and single-member electoral system. The deputies elected to the House of Commons usually meet periodically and, above all, individually, the voters of their constituency, the so-called “constituents”. Meetings take place face to face, like those a patient would have with the doctors in the “surgery”, of his “general practitioner”, or “Gp”, the Italian equivalent of the family doctor.
