Just like in Poland, the identity of the Irish is closely linked to Catholicism. They consider themselves the oldest bastion of the Catholic faith in the world, capable of strenuously resisting the attacks of other confessions. The cross on the green island was stuck by St. Patrick in the 5th century. Since then, the position of the Catholic Church has not been weakened even by great hunger, emigration and Protestantism.
