Rome, 13 May 2021 – The Italy of tennis is celebrating with Lorenzo Sonego. The class of ’95 stretches 2-1 Dominic Thiem after a battle lasting over three hours and qualifies for the quarter-finals of the Internationals of Rome. Pure spectacle between the blue and the Austrian, with the latter giving up 6-4 in the first set. Then in the second he risks to leave the scene for good, but is saved thanks to the tie-break. The challenge is thus decided in the third set, where really everything happens. Sonego goes 2-0, but the opponent responds by winning four consecutive games. Inertia seems to be on the side of the number four of the world, who flies to 5-3. But Thiem wasted a match point, then lost his serve. This set also goes to the tie-break, which sees the Turinese prevail. Now on the road to Sonego there is Andrey Rublev.

Outside Berrettini
Instead, the Roman adventure of the landlord Matteo Berrettini ends, who yields in front of Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek prevails in two sets (7-6, 6-2), at the end of which the blue must complain especially for the first, which ends at the tie-break. Tie-break that rewards number five in the ATP ranking also thanks to an error by the referee, who does not see a double bounce of the ball. In the second set, on the other hand, there is no story, with Berrettini giving up his service already on the occasion of the third game and then accusing himself of fatigue, failing to worry his opponent, who thus qualifies for the quarter-finals of the capital’s tournament.
