Former Dutch national soccer goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is no longer in mortal danger after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

“Edwin is still in intensive care but is stable. Every time we visit him he is communicative,” said wife Annemarie van der Sar in a statement distributed by Ajax Amsterdam. Van der Sar’s long-time club Ajax also quoted the ex-keeper’s partner as saying: “We have to wait patiently to see how his situation will develop.”

Shock moment on vacation

As the newspaper De Telegraaf previously reported, the former world-class goalkeeper was struck by the brain hemorrhage while on holiday in Croatia. The 52-year-old was brought to a clinic by rescue helicopter from a Croatian island last week.

After a disappointing season, van der Sar resigned from his position as managing director at Ajax on June 1st. After almost eleven years in the management, he was empty, he wanted to calm down and distance himself, he said. Ajax had not won a title in the past season.
