According to British media reports, the Lebanese capital Beirut broke out on the 14th local time in the worst violent conflict in 13 years, causing at least 6 deaths and 32 injuries.
The incident started with a protest. Hundreds of people marched under the organization of the Shiite Muslim group Hezbollah and its allies, demanding the removal of the chief judge responsible for investigating the “Beirut port bombing incident” last year. More than 200 people were killed and thousands were injured.
So far, no one has been held accountable for this huge chemical explosion. But the judge in charge of investigating the port bombing case, Betar, was strongly opposed by Hezbollah and its allies, who accused him of political prejudice.
During the parade, snipers on the roof fired at the demonstrators, which triggered a fierce armed conflict. In the following hours, gunshots continued to be heard on the streets of Beirut, and ambulances honked their whistle to rescue the wounded. A security official said that four shells fell near a private school, causing panic.
In a joint statement, Hezbollah and its allies accused the right-wing Christian party “Lebanese Forces” of being behind the attack. The Lebanese Forces rejected these allegations.
In response to Thursday’s shooting, which is also the worst violent incident in Lebanon in many years, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati called on everyone to remain calm and announced a day of mourning on Friday. UN Secretary-General Guterres called for an immediate end to the violence and continued investigations into the massive explosion in August 2020.
The Lebanese military said it has detained nine suspects who shot at protesters during the Beirut demonstration and is investigating.
