World Rally Championship, the latest generation hybrids take to the race

by admin

Rally1. It is the name of the new hybrid racing cars that will debut in the World Rally Championship starting from the 2022 season, the 50th, marking the beginning of a new era in this discipline. The first appointment in which they are present is the legendary Monte-Carlo Rally, a must at the beginning of the season famous for the ice and snow conditions that the competitors have to face along the timed sections.

The cars that the manufacturers are preparing are: Toyota Yaris, Hyundai i20 N and Ford Puma. They are all equipped with a powertrain, with the same technical specifications, consisting of a 1.6-liter turbo engine of 380 hp (derived from the one used until last season) combined with an electric unit of 100 kW (134 hp) and 180 Nm of pair powered by a 3.9 kWh battery that allows you to travel about 20 km in 100% electric mode.

The hybrid unit produced by Compact Dynamics weighs about 84 kg and is classified as P3: the electric motor works downstream of the gearbox on the drive shaft. The batteries are supplied by Kreisel Electric, an Austrian company partner of Compact Dynamics. The maximum power reaches 514 hp. During the braking and release phases, the system instead recovers the energy and with this recharges the battery. If necessary, the accumulator can be recharged from the outside (it is in effect a plug-in hybrid) during technical stops. To recharge from 20 to 80% it will take about 20 minutes and only bio and synthetic fuels are allowed.
