The provisional toll of a railway accident in Iran at dawn is at least 17 dead and more than 50 injured. Some of the 50 injured are in serious condition and the death toll could rise.
According to preliminary information, four of the seven carriages on the train derailed in the dark near the town of Tabas. Rescue teams in ambulances and three helicopters have arrived in the area where communication is poor.
An investigation was launched to clarify the dynamics of the accident, but it seems that the train collided with an excavator.
