Currently, SONY is not deeply involved in competitive games, but according to a latest technology patent, they are planning to provide this feature for PlayStation 5. In the patent, SONY conceived a PS5 tournament system that allows players to easily set up online tournaments without using third-party software.
According to the patent, the system SONY envisions can be used to organize small tournaments with friends, as well as large-scale events with multiple games and a large number of participants. In the description it reads:
Online tournament integration may allow individuals, developers, and other vendors to host tournaments. Providing online tournament integration may involve simple tools for setting up and running tournaments at the platform level, while providing visibility into specific games. Therefore, users can use such tools to establish a small tournament with friends of casual players, and event planners can use such tools to run a large tournament with many participants, complex rules, and even[multiple]game titles. .
Players will be able to organize teams, invitations, competition arrangements, etc. through the “game network platform” (possibly PlayStation Network). Organizers will be able to customize the tournament with some parameters, including the name of the game to be played, the type of tournament (such as single elimination, Double elimination, Swiss system, round robin, death race, racing), bracket type, competition type, time frame, number of participants, participation parameters, competition time, competition level, specific map to be played and/or strategy to be implemented”. Interestingly, SONY even proposed a system where the skill level of participants will be determined based on their achievements in the games they play.
