BERLIN – The agreement between the United States and Germany on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was intended to restart the work, but also to bring the two allies closer together, perhaps even going so far as to remove some of the poison circulating on the issue. This last goal, however, seems not to have been achieved. Moscow can only have welcomed Washington’s “green light” for a project that allows it to double its gas exports to Europe, but expresses irritation at the joint German-American declaration that accompanied the agreement.
