Rebel Moon. Part 2, movie review (2024)

If we talk about controversial directors who generate followers and haters alike, there is no doubt that Zach Snyder It would be in the first positions of the top. Although it is also possible to place ourselves somewhere in between, recognizing her personality and her own style that she takes to the limits, being irritating on some occasions and a true guilty pleasure on others. Not in vain, within his filmography we find works of great quality such as the remake of George A. Romero’s classic “The dawn of the Dead” (2004), the great epic and culmination of his style “300” (06), “Watchmen” (09) or the undervalued one “Sucker Punch” (eleven). Later would come his controversial time in the DC Universe, of which, without a doubt, his version of the director of “The Justice League” (21) is his most notable contribution.

Having established this necessary preamble, we arrive at “Rebel Moon”that kind of reimagining of the universe “Star Wars”a kind of “The seven magnificents” in galactic key divided into two parts. Unfortunately, neither of them comes to live – as expected – at the height of George Lucas’s imagination.

“Rebel Moon” tells how a group of rebels, led by Kora (Sofia Boutella), seek to protect themselves from the tyranny of Motherworld, which would be the equivalent of the Galactic Empire in “Star Wars”. But if the first film left us with doubts, since many characters joined the cause without delving into their interests, this one does not improve in that sense. While it uses time in slow motion – like that wheat harvest –, it wastes characters in meaningless scenes, but with a luxurious setting and effective visual effects.

The material is powerful and the world created by Snyder is interesting, however what he tells us is not. It reduces everything to a small town, limiting to ridiculous proportions everything that is supposed to be coming. In any case, the director himself has stated that there is already an extended version of his production, fuller of violence and with greater depth when it comes to treating the characters. We will see if this version reveals the full potential of the saga or leaves us as before. But, without a doubt, it has been a turbulent beginning and who knows if it will be the end.
