Apple: New iPhone generation comes with USB-C

For the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, Apple relies on the outdated USB 2.0. The new A17 Pro processor, like USB 3.0, is reserved for the iPhone 15 Pro.

As expected, Apple has introduced the new iPhone generation. The four models in total – iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max – have one innovation in common: USB-C replaces Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector for charging the battery, connecting accessories and connecting to a computer.

Enabling entry into the new generation iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, which Apple equips with OLED displays in sizes 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches. Also new is the Dynamic Island function, introduced last year with the Pro models, which provides information about notices and ongoing activities.

Both smartphones are powered by the A16 processor of the iPhone 14 Pro, which is supported by either 128, 256 or 512 GB of storage. The rear camera system consists of a 48-megapixel main camera and a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera. 5G, LTE, WLAN 6, Bluetooth 5.3, UWB and NFC are available as wireless connections.

The battery charges wirelessly with up to 15 watts and should reach around 50 percent of its charging capacity in 30 minutes with a 20 watt power supply. iOS 17 is used as the operating system. While the iPhone 15 costs at least 949 euros, Apple charges at least 1099 euros for the iPhone 15 Plus. For the price, however, you have to be content with USB 2 and data transfers of a maximum of 480 Mbit/s.

At the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max Apple also relies on OLED displays with diagonals of 6.1 and 6.7 inches. However, the Pro models are reserved for the new A17 Pro processor, which offers 6 CPU cores, 6 GPU cores and a 16-core Neural Engine.

Pre-orders from September 15th

The camera system of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max also offers a telephoto camera. The iPhone 15 Pro has 12 megapixels with a focal length of 77 millimeters, which corresponds to a 3x telephoto. The Pro Max has a focal length of 120 millimeters and therefore a 5x telephoto. In addition, the USB-C port on the Pro models supports USB 3.0 and thus transfer rates of up to 10 Gbit/s.

For an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, users have to spend at least 1,199 or 1,449 euros. The top model with a terabyte of storage even costs 1,949 euros. All new iPhones can be pre-ordered from September 15th. They go on sale on September 22nd.
