The video portal TikTok wants to label external content created with artificial intelligence in the future. The Chinese company said the move was an attempt to prevent the spread of misinformation among users. “AI offers incredible creative possibilities, but can confuse or mislead viewers if they don’t know that the content was generated with AI,” TikTok said. Labeling creates clarity.
Content created with TikTok’s own effects would already be labeled. The authors have also been required for a year to inform users of realistic AI representations. The new technology is also intended to recognize when external images and videos have been generated using AI and mark them as such on the TikTok platform.

The company announced that the technology has been in use since Thursday and will soon also be available for audio-only content. In the coming months, content created on TikTok will also be given so-called content credentials. These remain after downloading to make AI-generated content created on TikTok easier to identify on other platforms. Other platforms that use content credentials can then also automatically mark the content as AI-generated.
TikTok claims to be the first video platform to put such a technical solution into practice. The platform wants to join an initiative led by software company Adobe to promote the adoption of credentials in the industry.
