In normal times, the “liturgy of the exodus” was staged at the end of July: a press conference to illustrate the calendar of intelligent departures for the holidays, including red and black stamps, the deployment of patrols and, most recently, those few construction sites not interruptible in August. Since last year, the first concern for users is construction sites and shrinkage. Collapses and judicial investigations have made them proliferate, to remedy years of omitted or deficient maintenance: now too many works must be done immediately and many checks reveal problems that lead to unscheduled traffic restrictions.

Thus, to the usual sections that are in crisis due to the enormous volume of traffic of the summer exodus, others have been added whose flow has been reduced by construction sites and narrowings. The attached map shows only the latter. Only the highways were considered. Both for simplicity and because ordinary roads are rarely a really valid alternative: on almost all main axes it is insufficient and its maintenance conditions are almost always worse than motorways. However, it must be said that Anas closes 435 of the approximately 800 construction sites on its network from 23 July to 5 September.

The map cannot be completely exhaustive: there can always be news at the last moment. Not only for the unexpected during the checks (the last one made the two lanes of the Torraccia viaduct of the A1 narrower on the already critical Barberino-Calenzano stretch and from Monday 2 August other inspections on the Sicilian motorways, which are among the most neglected, begin) . There are also pressures coming from the territories.
The latest example is the Provençal tunnel of the A10, between Genoa Airport and Genoa Pra ‘towards Savona: the serious deterioration had emerged at the end of the winter and the local authorities had asked for postponements of the total closure for works, to concentrate the inconvenience from 6 August, when urban travel decreases. But now csi goes to a construction site from 9 to 23 August and the two-way transit in the carriageway towards Genoa instead of the total closure towards Savona. While other construction sites around Genoa remain suspended. We will see, but long queues seem inevitable.
The number of lanes is not everything
In the attached map we try as much as possible to indicate the number of lanes that can be traveled for each direction of travel. The worst situation is when there is only one. All the more so in Italian practice, where that one lane is “contested” without rules, with the result that everyone has to stop, creating a queue. In Northern Europe we try to alternate the passages (one vehicle from the left lane, another from the right one, then again one from the left and so on), so that everyone knows when it is his turn and those uncertainties do not arise. on who has to pass which force you to slow down too much or stop.
