“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” attracted many people to the cinemas last year – but once again many operators gave up

The Swiss cinema market continued to recover last year. As new figures show, the halls were particularly full in the summer – also thanks to the simultaneous release of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”. But many cinemas closed their doors.

Fictional worlds attracted the most people to Swiss cinemas last year: no film achieved as many admissions as “Barbie” with 716,312. The Canadian action director James Cameron sold 638,108 tickets last year for his film “Avatar: The Way of Water”, which was released in cinemas at the end of 2022 – and over a million since the film was released. This is shown by figures from the Procinema association.
