According to the fifth Cameroonian household survey (Ecam5), of which the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published the results two days ago, almost two out of five Cameroonians live below the national poverty line, estimated at 813 Fcfa, or 1.24 euros, per day and per person. “With this threshold, approximately ten million people lived in poverty in 2022, for a total population estimated at approximately 27 million inhabitants,” specifies the INS in the statement announcing the results.

The body responsible for applied statistics in Cameroon explains this situation with several factors, reports the Invest in Cameroon portal. These include “in particular insufficient economic growth, distortions linked to the redistribution of wealth, as well as various endogenous and exogenous shocks linked to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and fluctuations in world prices” of raw materials and exported products.

Furthermore, the INS report adds that in Cameroon, poverty is more widespread in rural areas, where the incidence is 56.3%, while urban areas record a much lower incidence, estimated at 21.6%. . “The Far North, North West, North, Adamaoua and East regions are the poorest, with poverty levels above the national average. As regards consumption inequalities, they remain at a high level, because the 20% of the richest families have consumption 10 times higher than that of the 20% of the poorest families”, underlines the report.
