Cars recovering from last year but registrations are down 27.9% on 2019

by admin

It is catching up with respect to the spring of 2020 but remains well below the levels of 2019. This is the picture of the car market in Italy, with numbers far from a real recovery. Last month 142,730 cars were registered, with a decline of 27.9% on May 2019, while the figure is up by almost 43% on the result of May 2020, a month still strongly affected by the dynamics of the lockdown and the pandemic of COVID-19.

The result of last month, notes Gian Primo Quagliano of the Centro Studi Promotor, is still positively affected by the incentives in place even for “traditional” engines with CO2 emissions up to 135 grams per kilometer. «The allocation for this family of bonuses – underlines Quagliano – however ran out on 8 April. For a few weeks the market will still be supported by the incentives booked up to that date, then from mid-June the market indicators could get worse ».

All brands recorded strong recoveries in May

The only exceptions are Renault, which loses 8.9% on May 2020 although it recovers 29% from January to May of this year over the entire period of 2020, and Alfa Romeo (-5.12% on May of the year). last year), which has lost 3.08% since the beginning of the year. The best performances in the month were the Audi brands – + 60% in May, 83.6% recovery from the beginning of the year on 2020 -, Fiat, which exceeds 16% on the market and recovered 70% of registrations in the month on May 2020, together with Lancia (+ 90%).

Jeep scores one of the best results since the beginning of the year, recovering 74% of registrations from January-May of 2020 and exceeding 4% of market share. BMW (+ 72.5%) and Mercedes (+ 71% from the beginning of the year) also did well, as did Peugeot and Opel. Toyota doubles its volumes in Italy in the five months: from 21,600 to over 44,000 cars registered, with a market share of over 6%.

The knot of incentives

The match of incentives in Italy for cars with emissions between 61 and 135 grams per kilometer therefore goes to overtime. The 400 million of additional funding did not actually enter the Sostegni-bis Decree and it is difficult for the question to pass with the amendments. For the operators of the sector it was a cold shower that will now at least try to recover.
