China Evergrande dodges default, manages to pay $ 83.5 million in interest owed on offshore bonds

China Evergrande would be close to paying interest due on September 23 on some bonds it had issued, thus avoiding a default that the markets had almost taken for granted.

The news of the interest payments was reported by the Securities Times, a Chinese financial newspaper controlled by Beijing.

Interest payable amounts to an equivalent of $ 83.5 million, on offshore bonds maturing in March 2022.

The deadline for their payment was set precisely on 23 September, but the legislation allows the debtor to use a window, or grace period, of 30 days, and Evergrande would be ready to pay interest by 23 October. , that is by tomorrow.

The bonds, denominated in dollars, are mainly held by foreign investors.
