According to data released by the Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility, the first quarter of the year saw an overall volume of car registrations equal to 446,978 units, + 28.6% over the same period of 2020. confirm towards hybrid fuel technologies (HEV), whose share in the quarter reached 27%, confirming the overtaking of the share of diesel registrations, which has now reached a quarter of the market (25%). Over the past two years, diesel has lost nearly 19 pp of market share.

Looking at the month of March alone, ANFIA points out how the decline of diesel and petrol cars has continued, the market share of which is progressively reducing in favor of hybrid and electric cars. Diesel passenger cars, for the second consecutive month, did not exceed the 25% share threshold and accounted for 24.1% of the March market and a quarter of the market in the first quarter of 2021. The share of petrol-powered cars: 31.2% in the month and 33.3% in the cumulative of the first three months.

On the other hand, registrations of alternative fuel cars reached 44.7% in March 2021 and 41.7% in the first quarter. Electrified cars represent more than a third of the market (36% in the month and 33.5% in the cumulative). Among these, non-refillable hybrids accounted for 27.3% of the March market (for the second consecutive month they hold a higher share than diesel) and 26.9% in the cumulative. Rechargeable cars, on the other hand, reach 8.7% share (plug-in hybrids 4.4% in the month and 3.6% in the cumulative, and electric 4.3% in the month and 3 % in the cumulative). Finally, gas-powered cars represent 8.7% of the market in the third month of 2021 and 8.2% in the quarter; among these, LPG cars have a market share of 6.1% in the month and 5.8% in the cumulative and methane cars of 2.6% in the month and 2.4% in the first quarter.

At the level of individual models, Fiat Panda, Lancia Ypsilon and Fiat 500 hybrids occupy the top three places in the mild / full hybrid segment. Among the PHEVs, Jeep Renegade and Jeep Compass plug-in conquer the top two positions in the sales ranking, while the Fiat 500 is the second best-selling electric model.
