Brussels (dts news agency) – The new EU Vice Parliament President Jan-Christoph Oetjen (FDP) has proposed canceling EU financial aid for farmers and, in return, reducing EU requirements for agriculture. “If we abolish the EU agricultural subsidies and all the bureaucracy, our farmers would be happier,” said Oetjen to the “Editorial Network Germany” (Thursday edition).
“Every farmer would tell you that he would rather forego the money than have to comply with all the regulations,” claimed the FDP politician. He pointed out that there was a lot of criticism of European rules during the farmers’ protests in Germany.
With a view to the vote on frozen Hungarian funds this Thursday, Oetjen said that one should not allow himself to be blackmailed by a recalcitrant head of government. “The blackmailer Hungary knows: Anyone who has paid once will pay again,” says Oetjen. “If the EU Commission releases money for Hungary again, we as a group will initiate a vote of no confidence.”
