A follower of Jehovah’s Witnesses received an unwanted blood transfusion during an operation in Spain despite a written statement: The European Court of Human Rights will rule on Wednesday whether this violated her right to private life. The woman, who comes from Ecuador and lives in Spain, had submitted several documents before an operation to refuse a blood transfusion, even if her life was in danger.
The woman was transferred to another hospital because of severe bleeding. The doctors there asked a judge how they should proceed because of their religious affiliation. He knew nothing about the previously submitted documents and approved the blood transfusion. After her recovery, the woman sued the judge, but was dismissed by the Spanish justice system. The religious community of Jehovah’s Witnesses rejects blood transfusions.
