From banks to gas, this is how the Russian oligarchs control Ukrainian private companies

The presence of Russian oligarchs in the Ukrainian economy is steadily declining, but their relative weight is far from secondary. Especially in the field of energy and credit.

Starting with the “International consortium for the management and development of the gas transport system of Ukraine” established in 2003 and jointly controlled by the Russian Gazprom and the Ukrainian Naftogaz.

Then there is Gazpromneft Lublicants Ukraine, which opened a service station on the Kiev-Odessa highway in 2012: this company created by Gazprom in 2008 gained access to the Ukrainian consumer following agreements between then Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and Putin after the “gas war”.

However, the presence becomes more cumbersome when it comes to Rosneft which controls the second refinery in the country through Cyprus Rosneft SH Investments Limited.

The “Nuclear Fuel Plant” is also 50% owned by the Russian “TVEL”.

The “Energomashspetsstal” machine building is nominally owned by Cyprus EMSS Holdings Limited, however, its latest beneficial owner is Rosatom: in Ukraine, the company produces cast and forged products for metallurgy, shipbuilding and energy.

Alfa-Bank is one of the largest banks in Ukraine: its majority shareholder is a Russian oligarch of Ukrainian origin Mikhail Fridman, who owns 32.86% of the shares and assets estimated by Forbes at 15.5 billion dollars.

The “Forward” bank is 100% owned by the Russian businessman Rustam Tariko, owner of the Russian bank “Russian Standard” and the eponymous brand of vodka.

“Pin Bank” belongs to a Russian businessman, a native of Kharkov Evgeny Giner, owner and president of the Moscow football club CSKA.

One of the big telecom operators – Kyivstar – also has Russian roots.

Intertelecom is an Internet provider owned by Russian businessman Viktor Gushan, owner of the Sheriff business group.

“Sportmaster”, on the other hand, is a network of stores that sell sports goods, represented in 16 cities of Ukraine: the owners of the company are the Russians Alexander Mikhalsky and brothers Vladimir and Nikolay Fartushnyaki.

“Brocard” is a chain of cosmetics and perfumery shops. The beneficial owner of the company is a citizen of Russia Tatyana Volodina.
